Semi- and Finals - 12 July, 2001
|
Every year since 1962, for almost a week,
Marseille becomes "pétanque city" to host the worlds' largest tournament,
organized by the daily newspaper "La Marseillaise".
Forty years ago, there were 388 teams ( 1164 players ); for this years' 40th edition, 3460
teams showed up, totalling 10380 players! Hundreds of courts are used in parks throughout
town, while the finals are held right in the heart of the old port, Marseilles' famous
city center. It's an amazing experience. If you're ever in France early July, head south
to Marseille! |
